Casino

The Showboat Atlantic City is a hotel and former casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Showboat opened as a casino hotel in 1987 and closed in 2014; the hotel reopened in 2016. It is owned by developer Bart Blatstein. The Showboat originally opened with a 60,000-square-foot casino back in 1987 and continued to offer slots and table games all the way up to its 2014 closing. Blatstein purchased and reopened the property as a non-gaming hotel on July 8, 2016. When Caesars Entertainment closed the property, NJ online gambling was still in its infancy. Should he succeed in restoring gambling there, the Showboat would become Atlantic City's 10th casino. Two others that also closed in 2014 — the Trump Taj Mahal and Revel — reopened in 2018 under new brands, the Taj Mahal as Hard Rock and Revel as the Ocean Casino Resort.

The Reasons for Opting Out

Despite the fact that Caesars Entertainment holds a valid New Jersey-issued online gambling license, it remains uncertain whether it will ever receive a Showboat-branded online casino. In fact, no such plans have been announced in any of Caesars’ press releases, which makes it hard to even speculate whether such a site would operate as a part of the Bally’s/888 partnership or under the separate Caesars/Amaya license.

Perhaps one of the reasons why Caesars Entertainment doesn’t seem to be seriously considering the launch of a Showboat online casino is the fact that the company already operates a number of successful New Jersey gambling sites, which include HarrahsCasino.com, WSOP.com, CaesarsCasino.com, as well as an 888-branded project.

The revenue generated by those sites totaled $3,335,470 in February 2014, which was a 9% increase over January. With a 30% market share, the company is under no pressure to focus on launching additional sites, especially when dealing with what is essentially a land-based casino brand that has never been associated with online gaming. As is often the case in uncertain situations, the rumors of Caesars Entertainment putting a Showboat Casino on the market have been surfacing from time to time. However, if you’re looking for a chance to check out Caesars new online casino games, you’ve got no choice but to stick with the other options for now.

Showboat History

Showboat Atlantic City was opened in 1987. This Mardi Gras themed resort was purchased by Harrah’s Entertainment in 1998 and as such became a part of Caesars Entertainment’s New Jersey casino empire along with all the other Showboat properties located in other cities. The hotel is located to the north of Trump Taj Mahal and opened with only 516 rooms and a 60,000 square feet casino floor. In 2003, Showboat Atlantic City was expanded with a new 544 room tower, which was called the Orleans tower. The renovation cost $90 million, but that didn’t stop the owners from remodeling the original Bourbon Tower four years later.

As a result, Showboat Atlantic City boasts an impressive 127,978 square feet casino floor, as well as a House of Blues restaurant and several House of Blues suites. The additional amenities include a 3,500 square feet spa, a large fitness center, a pool and two gift shops. All in all, the Showboat may not be the most impressive resort of this kind in the entire Atlantic City, but the massive gaming space and the broad selection of casino games make it fairly popular among the local gambling enthusiasts.
